Act! by Sage

We have found Act! by Sage to be one of the best contact manager’s and business helps for any size business.  Because of the customization available in the software, it is especially useful in the small business.  Ocassionally, at the beginning of the year you can find a new version on sale for about $99 after rebates at office supply stores.

Act! runs on SQL and is created to run well with many, many contacts.  The beauty of the software is the separation kept with companies, people, tasks, calendars and opportunities.  Everything links eventually back to a contact.  Act! keeps a history of all of your work and you can use timers to keep track of how long you spend working with contacts.  We use this to keep track of time for billing purposes.

Act integrates with Microsoft Office well for form letters, labels and envelopes.  However, we have also used the internal editor to create many of our standard documents.  We send all our emails through Act! giving us a history by person of our conversations.

The one lacking item in Act! is the documentation.  Using Act! out of the box is easy and straightforward.  To take advantage of some of the customization, however, there is not as much documenation.  Digging through the web you can find some help.  Unfortunately, the report writer is serverly underdocumented and difficult to get through.

We will be posting information we learn (frequently the hard way) about Act!  This includes making work more efficient and tricks to get reports and labels printing and processing the way you want.  Let us know if you come up with any tips so we can post those here.

Look for the Act! tag on the sidebars.
